Roulette is often considered to be one of the easier games to play in the casino. Unfortunately, with that label comes a host of players who think that means they don't need to pay attention at the table! This isn't exactly true, and those players are not employing the best of roulette strategies.Proper roulette strategies are not systems. A system is a methodology for betting which essentially gives you a set of rules to follow as you wager, supposedly (but not likely) altering the edge of the game, increasing the odds of winning. There are literally thousands of systems for roulette being sold around the world, but these should be ignored for the most part, and shouldn't be considered strategies. In general, systems are often faulty or pose potential risks that may not be obvious at first glance.Roulette strategies, as opposed to systems, offer methods by which to play, but simply as a guide, not as steadfast rules. Strategies do not claim to mathematically beat the house at all, they usually offer simpler advice on things like setting win and loss limits. As a smart gambler, one of the best roulette strategies you can employ is one that revolves around bankroll management. Take this example: a player starts with a bankroll of $100. To protect their investment they set a loss limit of $100, their entire session bankroll. This means if the player looses this money in the course of playing, they have set a personal rule to not return to the session after getting more money. The player also sets a win limit of $300, meaning if they manage to go $300 over their original bankroll they will stop playing, and limit the risk of losing those winnings in a downswing. This is as basic as roulette strategies get, but it is extremely effective, if you learn to follow your own rules.Slightly more advanced and protective forms of roulette strategies may involve something like a player starting with the same $100 bankroll, but limiting play to initial luck. This means they play through their $100 until they have either lost it all (same session loss limit) or won a predetermined amount. To keep things simple in this example, let's say the players predetermined amount is also $100. This means if the player wins $100 once they start playing, they will take their original $100 bankroll and put it in their pocket - they will then only be playing with their winnings. The player may choose to set a wins limit on their newly acquired bankroll, but the beauty of the strategy is that they have basically set a loss limit of zero. Once you pocket your original bankroll, even if you lose all you're playing with, you've lost nothing at all.

An Ace can count as either 1 or 11, as demonstrated below.
The cards from 2 through 9 are valued as indicated.
The 10, Jack, Queen, and King are all valued at 10.

The suits of the cards do not have any meaning in the game.The value of a hand is simply the sum of the point counts of each card in the hand. For example, a hand containing (5,7,9) has the value of 21. The Ace can be counted as either 1 or 11. You need not specify which value the Ace has. It's assumed to always have the value that makes the best hand. An example will illustrate: Suppose that you have the beginning hand (Ace, 6) This hand can be either 7 or 17. If you stop there, it will be 17. Let's assume that you draw another card to the hand and now have (Ace, 6, 3) Your total hand is now 20, counting the Ace as 11. Let's backtrack and assume that you had instead drawn a third card which was an 8. The hand is now (Ace, 6, 8) which totals 15. Notice that now the Ace must be counted as only 1 to avoid going over 21.

A hand that contains an Ace is called a "soft" total if the Ace can be counted as either 1 or 11 without the total going over 21. For example (Ace, 6) is a soft 17. The description stems from the fact that the player can always draw another card to a soft total with no danger of "busting" by going over 21. The hand (Ace,6,10) on the other hand is a "hard" 17, since now the Ace must be counted as only 1, again because counting it as 11 would make the hand go over 21.

Some people think the object of the game is to get 21, or to get closer to 21 than the dealer without "busting," which means going over 21. This is incorrect! The real objective of the game is to beat the dealer. There are 3 ways in which a player can beat the dealer:

1. The player receives an ace and a 10-value card for blackjack.
2. The player gets closer to 21 than the dealer.
3. The dealer goes over 21 and the player, regardless of what the total is in his hand, does not.

The game starts with every player making their opening bets. Make sure to read the sign next to the dealer which indicates the minimum and maximum table limit. Most online casinos have table limits from as low as $1 up to $100. After all the players placed their bets the dealer will start dealing the cards. Starting with the player to his left he gives every player one card, face down, including himself. This is the dealers down card. Then he deals a second round of cards, face down but this time the card he deals himself will be face up. This is the dealers up card. You now can look at both of your cards and find your total by simply adding the values of your cards.

As per normal poker rules - playing and betting proceeds in a clockwise direction.
All Players must first ante before they receive their initial cards, except the $0.50/$1 game which has no ante.
There are five betting rounds in a complete game of Seven-Card Stud, not including the ante.
On the first round of betting, the Player with the lowest value door card "brings-in" and starts the betting - equal to at least half the minimum bet for the game. In proceeding rounds, the Player with the highest hand initiates the betting. If hands tie, the Player to the left of the dealer acts first.
Betting increments in the game determine the bets. In a game of $2 and $4 betting increments, the first two rounds of betting and raising are set at the lower level of $2, the other three rounds of betting and raising are set at the higher level of $4.
The exception to this rule is if any Player displays a pair with their 2 face-up cards on 4th Street. In this circumstance, all Players have the option to bet either the lower limit or the higher limit. If a Player bets the higher limit, then all subsequent raises must be made at the higher limit.
The maximum allowable number of bets per Player during any betting round is four. This includes a (1) bet, (2) raise, (3) re-raise, and (4) cap. The term cap is used to describe the 3rd raise in a round since betting is then capped and can't be raised further. Once capped, Players will have only the option of calling or folding.
In betting rounds where Players have folded, the first active Player left of the Disc/Dealer is first to act.

Well roulette has met the final frontier. No not space, I mean the Internet, the final earthly frontier! Online roulette is pretty much exploding right now, as are most other casino games that have migrated into online casino software over the past five years or so. There are many reasons people try out online gambling, the most obvious one being the fact that not many people can afford to fly to Vegas as often as they might like. Bringing real gambling online has many would be Vegas frequenters saving some money on plane tickets. I've truly come to enjoy playing roulette online. It's virtually the same as playing in a real casino, and if you're a serious player it even holds some advantages. The casinos throw as much distraction as they can at you while you gamble. They feed you free booze, keep lots of mirrors around so you're never really sure where you are, constantly send beautiful girls walking by the table, clang coins and buzzers and bells and whistles all around you, all in a rather effective attempt to take your money in as smooth a way as possible. Playing online eliminates all but a few of these nasty distractions. A great number of people prefer to play in a real casino of course, because all of the distraction is elegantly disguised as entertainment. And of course to many it is, the glitz and glamour of a Vegas casino can hardly be beaten. So you would expect that online roulette is more for those who like the game itself, but I've found many different types of people enjoy it right off the bat. I think the main reason for this is the fact that there is no intimidation factor, no dealers to make you nervous, no high rollers making you feel puny, no cigar smoke, and no worries about embarrassing yourself by making a wrong move. These may not seem like huge reasons, but actually, those are some pretty powerful negatives. Many friends I have hate cigar smoke so much they often find it difficult to find a table to play at in the casino. Countless others have never actually walked up to the roulette table, however much they would have liked to, because they don't know if they may do something wrong. So playing online roulette garners as much benefit to the new and inexperienced player as it does the serious one who is interested in the game more than the casino hoopla. Most people who ask me about online roulette ask the same question. Are the odds the same playing online as playing at the casino? Well, if you've read our roulette odds page, you'll know that American roulette has a rather incontrovertible house edge and that certainly couldn't change. Unless a game has been blatantly fixed, you'll find you have as much success and failure at the online roulette tables as in the casino. The beautiful thing about playing online though, is the abundance of European roulette wheels available. Playing on a European (single zero) roulette table automatically cuts the house edge down to almost half of it's American cousin. This is by far the most convincing reason to play roulette online, unless you're lucky enough to have a European roulette wheel just down the street.
