Before Nevada legalized gambling in 1931, methods for cheating the patrons were commonly employed. Illegal gambling (along with other illicit activities) was prevalent in Vegas since the turn of the century. Special or modified rulete wheels were part of the action. Many of these rigged or gaffed wheels remained in operation for several years after 1931. Once the new gaming commission was established and put into power, these wheels found their way over to off-the-beaten-path places and illegal out-of-state operations. As the commission developed some teeth in their bite, casino cheating ceased to exist in Nevada. These gaming commissions can stroll up unannounced, confiscate any gaming equipment as they see fit and take it back to their labs for a thorough inspection. The casinos do not want to risk losing their gaming license. Today, in Nevada or Atlantic City, you wont find any gaffed or juiced wheels out on the casino floors. But any gaming establishment operating where gambling is illegal is already breaking the law and has no license to lose. Be advised, you are probably being cheated in some way. Even in places where gambling is legal, but there is no strong regulatory agency, be wary! I have included several of the more common modes of cheating. Most of these are antiquated.

• High Card - This is used when no one at all on the table has any other winning hand such as a pair or better. The winner will be judged on who has the highest card, if 2 or more people have the same high card then they will move onto the 2nd highest card and so on until someone wins. This is also used if in a game some people have the same winning hand. For example, if Cheryl and Nigel were playing and they both revealed a pair of 8's then they would see who had the highest cards. • Pair - When a player has two cards the same such as two 8's. Ties are broken using the 'High Card'. • Two Pairs - A hand consisting of two pairs such as two 8's and two 10's. Ties are broken using the 'High Card'. • Three Of A Kind - Three cards that are the same numberwise. No need for the high card as there is only four of each value per deck. • Straight - All 5 cards consecutive but not in the same suit. For example, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. If two people have a straight then the highest straight wins. If more than one person has the same straight then they split the pot between them. • Flush - Any 5 cards of the same suit, the numbers do not matter but if more than one person has a flush then the one containing the highest card wins. • Full House - Two cards of the same value and three cards of the same value such as 7, 7, Queen, Queen, Queen. The highest wins. • Four Of A Kind - Four cards of the same numerical value such as four 10's. No need for the high card as there is only four of each value per deck. • Straight Flush - Five cards of the same suit in numerical order such as 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 of hearts. The higher the straight the better. • Royal Flush - Five cards of the same suit, MUST be 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace.

Basic Rules of Play Players place their bets prior to the cards being dealt. Tables and onlinecasinos will have a minimum bet required to play the game. Once all bets areplaced, each player and the dealer will receive two cards. Starting to thedealer's left side, the cards are dealt in a round one at a time to each playerending with the dealer receiving his second card face down. Depending on thegame, the player's are either dealt their cards face up or face down.
Each card in Blackjack has a certain value. Card between 2 and 10 simply havetheir face value regardless of suit. Jacks, Queens and Kings always have a valueof 10. An Ace can count as 1 or 11 depending on what is most beneficial to yourhand.
Player's add the value of their cards and either decide to "Stick" or"Stand" with their current cards or receive another card, called a"Hit" or "Draw," hopefully raising their total closer to 21without going over.
Once all players have decided to "Stand," the dealer reveals the facedown card known as the "Hole" card. If the dealer's hand is between 17and 21, he or she may not draw any additional card. If the dealer's hand is 16or below, cards must be drawn until the dealer's hand has a value of 17 orhigher.
Blackjack Bets Blackjack can be won in a few different ways. If your first two cards total 21,you have Blackjack and win 3:2 odds (A $5.00 wager pays 7.5 additional dollars)on your bet automatically unless the dealer draws Blackjack as well causing atie or a "Push." In the case of a tie, no money is won or lost. Youwin if your hand is closer to 21 than the dealer's hand. This type of win pays"Even Money" meaning that you win the same amount of money that youwagered. A $10.00 wager wins 10 additional dollars. Finally, if the dealer"Busts" or has a hand that exceeds 21 and your hand is less than 21,you win!
Double Down - A double down allows you to double your wager while youstill only have two cards in your hand. You are required to take one more cardonce you double down and cannot receive any additional cards after this. A handthat initially adds up to 10 or 11 is often the hand to double down on. Why? Theten card is the most frequently occurring card in the game of blackjack.Remember that the 10, Jack, Queen and King all have the value of ten multipliedby all suits. Because of this, there is a high chance that the third card thatyou receive will have a value of 10 bringing your hands value to 20 or 21.Pretty smart.
Splits - You can double your stakes another way by using a split. If youroriginal cards are of the same value (Ex. 7 and 7 or 9 and 9), you can splitthese two cards into separate hands creating two hands and a second bet equal toyour original bet. You now are playing two hands separately and increasing theirvalues by hitting each hand until you are ready to "Stand." The payoutfor winning on a split is always 1:1 or even money even if you have Blackjack. This is due to the fact that you did not get Blackjack using your original twocards.
Insurance - Insurance bets are not recommended for the basic player, asthe odds of winning with this type of bet are low. Insurance bets can be made ifthe dealer's face card is an ace. The dealer might have blackjack meaning thatyou automatically lose unless you also have blackjack, forcing a"Push."
Buying insurance means that you are protecting yourself in case the dealer hasblackjack. A $20.00 bet would cost you an additional $10.00 in insurance asinsurance normally costs half of your original bet. If the dealer does not haveblackjack on his turn, you lose your insurance wager and the hand continues tobe played normally. If the dealer does have blackjack, you lose your originalwager but win twice the amount of your insurance. In essence, you break even asinsurance pays 2:1 odds. Again, insurance protects you from losing money in casethe dealer has blackjack.

Baccarat has a pretty reasonable set of odds for the player. On player bets the house has a small edge, to compensate for this the house takes a commission (usually 5 percent) on winningbank bets.Bets are made prior to any cards being dealt. The banker plays against only one player at a time, but any or all the other players may bet on the hand.Baccarat is played on a kidney shaped table that can sit up to 12 or 14 players depending on the size of the table. Three dealers (croupiers) run the game; one handles the cards, while theother two handle the wagers and the commission that is paid on winning bank bets. Where the players sit is not important, but bets must be made in a marked area on the table thatcorresponds to the players seat. Players may bet three ways: on the bank, on the players hand, or for a tie. Players often switch from betting on the bank to betting on the players hand andvice versa. (Betting for a tie is not usually smart, while having a larger payoff, it is considered one of the worst wagers in the casino.) A bet is made by placing money on the table in yourmarked area on the wagered spot. For example if you are player number 3 and wish to bet on the bank you place the desired wager amount on the table layout place for player number 3marked bank.Winning player and bank bets pay even money (excluding commissions) Hands that result in a tie pay off tie wagers at 8 to 1 and a bank or player bet is treated as a push with the moneysitting on the table for the next hand.
